Get Involved! Thanksgiving Volunteer Opportunities

thanksgiving-picturesNovember is winding down and the holiday’s are fast-approaching! With Thanksgiving less than a week away, we have gotten an influx of inquiries regarding volunteer opportunities available in the community. Below you will find a compilation of a few of our favorite opportunities and resources for volunteering throughout Houston.

IM Meals on Wheels Thanksgiving

This is our go-to Thanksgiving Day volunteer opportunity. Interfaith Ministries has set a goal in 2015 to raise $80,000 in order to provide 16,000 holiday meals to seniors in need. It takes just $5 to provide a senior with a holiday meal. You can volunteer to deliver meals to seniors’ homes on Thanksgiving morning or work at the distribution site. Don’t have time or won’t be in Houston? You can also sign up to fundraise or simply donate to the cause. Today, Friday, November 20, is the last day to reserve a delivery route! If you don’t get a route reserved in time, go to the distribution site at 10:00am on Thanksgiving, where you can pick-up an unclaimed route! Visit their site for more information!

Volunteer Houston

Volunteer Houston’s mission is to effectively engage people and resources in volunteering and service. This is a great resource to use year-round to learn about local volunteer opportunities and to get involved. Visit their “Get Involved” page, where you can search a calendar of upcoming events that may interest you!

City Wide Club

City Wide Club is best known for their Annual Events, however, they need our support all year-round! Unfortunately, their Annual Thanksgiving Big Super Feast shifts are all full for this year. They do have sign-ups available for their Annual Christmas Eve Big Feast and Annual Easter Egg Hunt. In the meantime, if you want to help out for the Thanksgiving holiday, you can find a list of non-perishable food and household items they are in need of. And, as always, they except donations as well.

To many, the holidays mean family gatherings, hearty meals and gift exchanges. For others, however, the holidays aren’t always quite as cheerful. Volunteering, both during the holidays and throughout the year, is an amazing way to help those in need. Check out the opportunities above or simply search online or ask your family, friends or church about ways to get involved!
